It's our seventh season! Featuring performances at the City Opera House in Traverse City, MI, The Muriel Schulman Theater at Triskelion Arts in New York City, and Music Mountain Theatre in Lambertville, NJ. The Traverse City Dance Project is a Michigan-based seasonal dance company that was conceived in NYC seven years ago by founders and co-artistic directors Jennifer McQuiston Lott (LA) and Brent Whitney (NYC). We've gathered top dance artists from NYC, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, and Michigan, making it a true tri-coastal endeavor. We begin rehearsals in LA and NYC and hold an annual summer dance residency in Traverse City, MI where we invite the local community into our creative process through workshops, open rehearsals, and innovative performances. This past season marked our East Coast debut.

Cultivating new music for dance is a cornerstone of our mission. Our 2019 program featured a revamp of Ariel, Jennifer Lott's 2011 collaboration with composer Jonny Rodgers (Cindertalk), renowned for his skill on the glass harp. Lott also curated our new choreographic fellowship, #MadeinTC, through which she connected young choreographer Jakevis Thomason with internationally-acclaimed drummer Ian Chang, giving them time, space, and funds for them to create a new work on the dancers of TCDP. Their daring work, Framing the Push, closed our 2019 performances with a bang.

Brent Whitney's Schwanengesang highlights the final published work of composer Franz Schubert, a song cycle contemplating love and loss. We also commissioned new work from choreographer Austin Joseph Reynolds, who teamed up with composer Nathan Prillaman to create the haunting Behind Those Eyes, presented with violinist Hajnal Pivnick.
